Mas de Clarou, circled on the photograph: perched on a wooded hill above the village of Lasalle, seen from the village
Seen from Lasalle: the mas is perched on the hill opposite, inside the circle. The village is five minutes away, down below.

The place

A 17th-century mas, in the heart of the Cévennes

The mas

Built in the 17th century from local schist and granite, Mas de Clarou sits above the village, facing the Salindrenque valley and the first peaks of the Cévennes National Park.

A magnanerie is a silkworm farm — the trade that kept these valleys alive for two centuries, and that gave one of the two gîtes its name. All around, five hectares of olive and chestnut trees, held up by dry-stone bancels.

The village

Lasalle, a Cévennes village founded in the 11th century along the Salindrenque, a little over twelve hundred inhabitants — its summer markets, its restaurants, its 16th-century Pont Vieux, all five minutes away. The Cévennes National Park, a UNESCO site, begins here: hiking, river swimming, via ferrata, canoeing.

And within an hour’s drive, enough to fill a week without ever taking the same valley twice.
